In conjunction with the international oboist and professor, George Caird, I have researched Benjamin's Britten's Six Metamorphoses after Ovid op.49 using Britten's original composition sketches from the Britten Pears Library in Aldeburgh. This shows a fascinating insight to the concepts and construction of this masterpiece for solo oboe.

The results of the research have been published, written by George Caird, in a 20,000 word study booklet which accompanies a new CD with performances of the Metamorphoses by George Caird, Nicholas Daniel and the original version from 1952 by the work's dedicatee Joy Boughton. The printed music examples were produced by SPMS.

Being able to compare the different interpretations on the same CD alongside the study notes is valuable enough but, in addition, there are many example tracks of previously unheard material from Britten's sketches to show the development of the compositional process. This study will be of interest to Britten enthusiasts and scholars worldwide.

The CD recording is available from
